A Cinderella Story

“A Cinderella Story” is a cute, family friendly remake of the Cinderella story starring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray.

Young Sam adores and is adored by her father. Each night he reads her fairy tales before going to bed, and when her father is killed in an earthquake she’s devasted. And, because no one could find his will, everything was left to her step-mother (played with gusto by Jennifer Coolidge). Her step-mother treats Sam like hired help, expecting her to work crazy hours in her father’s diner while her step-sisters get to do whatever they want.

Sam doesn’t mind working in the diner, it’s the one place she feels close to her father. Fast forward several years, and Sam is still working in the diner and things haven’t gotten much better. Her step-sisters are outrageously spoiled, but Sam has been working hard and hopes to get into Princeton and get away from them and her step-mother.

Prince Charming, in this version, happens to be the school’s star quarterback, who has been admiring Sam from afar and sends her romantic poetry via text-messaging. Sam can’t figure out who it is, but he finally suggests that they meet at the school’s upcoming Halloween dance. Thanks to fellow waitress Rhonda (in the fairy god-mother role), Sam ends up with an amazing dress and disguise for the dance. When she realizes who her secret admirer is, Sam wonders if she’s good enough. Could the school quarterback really be interested in her?

“A Cinderella Story” is the perfect sleep-over movie, or great for some mother-daughter bonding time. It’s definitely a “chick” flick for tween and teen set, though I’ll admit I enjoyed it as well. Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray are very sweet in this film and the romance is as well. And, in fairy tale fashion, it does have a happy ending where everyone gets what they deserve.

The movie is rated PG for mild language and innuendo.
