Say what you want about Forrest Gump and I’ve seen plenty, but the line he made so popular is so popular because it is so apt and so profound. Our lives are like a box of chocolates and we never really know what we’re going to get when we bite into them. Among some of the best moments in our lives are the hidden truffles that we discovered quite by accident.
Hidden Treasures
When you discover one of these hidden treasures, you should hold it close to you and embrace it because these are those priceless moments that happen unexpectedly. One such moment happened after I became a parent. My husband and I were home from the hospital and our daughter couldn’t have been more than two or three days old – we were laying on the bed and she was sleeping between us and we just lay there holding hands and talking quietly.
When she was just 3 weeks old, I had to take her to the hospital for an unexplained fever. It spiked and then went away. But the hospital kept her overnight for observation. The next morning, the pediatrician on staff wanted to do an invasive test for spinal meningitis – he didn’t think it was a problem, but he wanted to eliminate it. I argued against it because she was so very young and I didn’t think so traumatic a procedure was necessary considering she’d had no signs of fever at all since we’d arrived at the hospital.
The doctor tried to browbeat me into it, all but calling me an irresponsible mother. I called my husband, it was 6:30 in the morning and he was there twenty minutes later and ready to back me up all the way with the doctor. She didn’t have the test and she didn’t have meningitis. He also backed the doctor down when they tried to call us bad parents.
Another moment came on our first night out after our daughter was born. I was a wreck, worried about her the whole time. My husband knew it and he did everything he could to distract me, amuse me and make me laugh. I remember laughing and seeing his warm smile and when I asked him “What?” he replied that life was a better place when he could make me smile, it was a wonderful place when he could make me laugh.
Treasure These Moments
I could go on and on about these small moments, these moments that come upon us so unexpectedly and happen in the briefest flicker of a candle. They are precious and they are worth remembering. Some of the best moments never present themselves as a moment to remember until you do remember it later. I know when I think on these types of moments, I can feel not only the love I have for my husband, but also the love he has for me.
