Almost every household has an old compact disc or two lying around. Whether it’s a free one that came in the mail with a trial version of software or internet service, or if it’s just one that nobody uses because it’s outdated or scratched, it can be used to make some fun projects.
If you don’t have any CDs lying around, you can purchase a small package of blank discs for just a few dollars or ask friends for those that he or she doesn’t use.
CD Magnets for the Fridge
Using paint markers or any kind of indelible markers, have your children decorate a CD. You can also add stickers, glue on beads, or add trim around the edges. Glue a small magnet or a piece of magnetic stripping to the back of the CD, and presto! You now have great homemade fridge magnets to hold up other artwork or notes.
CD Locker Magnets
This project is also a good one for older children. They can make awesome magnets to put in their lockers to hold up notes, schedules, reminders, pictures, or posters. Pick up a cool magazine and let them cut photos of their favorite celebrities or bands from it. They can just trace the CD onto the picture, cut out the circle they traced, and glue the picture onto the disc. For something a bit more decorative, your child can paint her name (or her boyfriend’s name) on the disc with nail polish or paint then decorate it with glitter.
CD Magnet Game
Make a tic-tac-toe board on your fridge using magnetic strips. Secure magnets to the backs of ten CD’s. Make X’s on five of them and O’s on the other five, using paints, markers, stencils, or letter decals. Decorate the discs with trim or other embellishments if desired. You not only have fun making the project, but you and your kids can also have fun playing the game.
