Save Money on Haircuts Part 1

Hair stylists recommend that people get their hair cut every six weeks. Most women I know do not get their hair cut that often, but many men find that they need to. If your family of four goes to a middle-of-the-road salon and pays $15-$25 per haircut, your bill could easily exceed $500 each year. I don’t know about you, but I found that the money my family was putting out for haircuts was well beyond what our budget could afford. If you feel that you are spending too much your family’s haircuts, consider this:

Look up the local cosmetology school in your area. If you are not sure how to find one, contact a few of the salons in your city and ask them where their cosmetologists attend school. Cosmetology schools offer hair cuts, perms, highlights, manicures, pedicures and waxing for a fraction of the price you pay at the salon. Haircuts cost anywhere from $5-$12 when you head to a school instead of a salon. Eye brow waxing at my local salon costs $3, a perm, $30 and manicures, around $8. You may be nervous that students are, in effect, practicing on you. Keep in mind that they will do their work under the supervision of their instructors. Their apprenticeship lasts for a year, so you could also consider asking the receptionist which students are closest to graduation, then request them. Plus, if you don’t like the job they do, it’s free! That may not sound reassuring, but at least you could still afford to get your hair fixed at a regular salon and be no worse off.

You may be wondering, “But can a school do everything my salon does?” The answer to that question is probably “No.” You won’t find yourself getting the introductory shoulder rub or scalp massage. The stylist won’t take ten minutes to wash your hair, or blow dry and style it when the cut is done. You are paying them for the job itself and since they’re in training, they do not do all of the service things that salons do. But hey, they also don’t charge you $38 a cut!
