Writer’s Digest Magazine

Are you an aspiring author? Are you already published but seeking ways to hone your craft? One of the most valuable tools you will find to help you in your quest is “Writer’s Digest Magazine.”

Each issue features a Brag Board, where readers can write in and share their accomplishments, such as finding an agent to represent them, getting their first article published, overcoming objections from friends and family to find success, etc. I find myself relating to much of what is said by the other readers and it gives me a feeling of unity.

The magazine regularly includes a calendar, with a writing prompt or assignment for each day of the month. These suggestions are fabulous for helping you to break out of your writer’s block and get your brain moving a whole new direction.

Then we break into articles that deal with more specific writing issues, such as the dimensions of character, how to handle several characters with dialogue in the same scene, or how to add tension to your scene. These articles include examples so you can plainly see exactly what is being discussed. I can’t tell you how many times these articles have helped me with a bad plot or characterization problem.

But the help isn’t limited to fiction. Fabulous articles about nonfiction, screenplays, scripts, magazine articles, and profiles fill the rest of the pages. Regardless of your genre, you will find help.

A returning feature that I particularly enjoy is the published author section, where they interview an author and tell how they achieved the success they did. It’s encouraging to me to realize that these authors have faced the same struggles I have, and that underneath it all, they’re pretty much the same as me.

You can learn more about this magazine here, or look at a copy at your local library. I truly consider it one of the best aids for writers currently on the market.
