Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins (2000)

buzzBuzz Lightyear returns to the screen in a way we’ve never seen him before – animated and in space. Our lovable ranger from “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” is out to conquer the Evil Emperor Zurg, who wants to take over the galaxy. With his gung-ho attitude and his strict adherence to regulations (most of which he wrote himself) he’s the man for the job.

The LGMs (little green men) are in danger, and Buzz (voiced by Tim Allen) along with his partner Warp Darkmatter, is sent to save them. But while on this mission, a battle ensues and Warp Darkmatter is killed. Vowing that he will never put another partner in danger, Buzz decides to work alone. However, this is against Star Command policy, and he is assigned a partner: Mira Nova, princess of a planet he once saved. She says his bravery on that fateful day inspired her to join Star Command, but he can’t afford to feel flattered. He won’t put anyone else in danger by allowing them to work with him, not even the former Star Command janitor the LGMs suggest as his new sidekick.

But when Zurg goes forward with his most daring scheme to date, Buzz realizes that he can’t go it alone. Everyone needs backup, even the world’s most powerful and ingenious space ranger. And when the biggest secret of all is revealed and Buzz learns that Warp is not dead, but has been working as a spy for Zurg, he learns that true friends can help you overcome the deepest disappointments.

This movie was a little more violent than the “Toy Story” films and wasn’t quite as funny, although it did have its comical moments. Despite my reservations, however, my kids have claimed it as their most favorite movie ever. Here are some comments from the real critics:

“It’s adventurous, funny, and it’s just, well, amazing!” Caryn, age 10

“It has lots of action!” Ammon, age 8

“It’s so funny and it’s so adventurous and the LGMs have green.” Joseph, age 5. (Green is his favorite color.)

There you have it! “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command” is a hit. You can also watch the television show daily on the Disney Channel and Toon Disney, where Patrick Warburton provides the voice for Buzz.

This film is not rated.
