Homeschool Glossary (words homeschoolers should know) – N-O

Natural Learning Systems – According to Time4learning.com, “The five natural learning systems which were developed by Barbara Givens include the emotional, social, cognitive, physical and reflective learning systems”. All of these items need to be considered when planning a curriculum for your child.

Network – in homeschooling, is a support group of homeschool parents who meet and discuss various issues, and share suggestions, ideas and resources. This may be a homeschool group, or a group of people that one homeschooling family knows they can rely on for answers and support. In other words, a homeschooling would consist of homeschoolers that are more experienced and acquaintances, as well as families who have children the same age and with similar interests to the kids.

Non-traditional learning – Non-traditional learning is any learning that is done outside of the classroom and without “school” materials. Instead of learning from a scheduled lecture, a child might learn from an impromptu discussion. Instead of completing a worksheet, your child might learn from playing a game or cooking.

Online support group – An online support group is exactly like a homeschooling group except that the participants do not meet face to face. Online homeschool support groups serve many purposes that can include emotional supports, or sharing local resources. There are even homeschooling groups with members from different localities or countries that may have just about anything in common. A homeschool forum can even be an online support group.

Open-ended question – Unlike a multiple-choice question with a few possible answers, or a true and false question with just two possible answers, an open-ended question would give the student a chance to answer in any variety of ways.

Outcome-based education – A carefully planned and integrated system of educational programs made to align specific student outcomes, instructional methods, and assessment. Outcome based education can only be expected to be truly successful with a handful of children. In homeschooling, this system of education is rarely used, as homeschoolers are able to base education on the individual instead of gearing a system toward a group.
