Keeping Up With Trends

While there is definitely such a thing as being too trendy, it can still be important when operating a home business to try to stay somewhat “in touch” with what is going on and what the latest and greatest trends are—both within your field and in the world at large.

Trade magazines and specialty publications are an excellent source of information about current and upcoming trends in various fields of business and interest. It may be worth your while to purchase or subscribe to one or two so you can stay current on what’s going on. Newspapers and related Web sites can also be a way to find out what’s going on in the world. I like to read the business section of my own local newspaper daily as it gives me an idea of what’s going on locally AND what the trends and markets are looking like on national and international scope.

Forums, blogs and other Web sites are good too. Many trade publications and special newsletters also have Web sites where they keep the information current. While a print publication has more “in-depth” articles, the Web site may have daily updates and more trendy information. If you have a direct sales business, your company may also provide constant information about current and predicted trends.

I’m a little lucky in that I have three teenagers still living at home—the perfect conduit for keeping up with trends in fashion, technology, cosmetics, music—you name it. Just listening to their comments and conversations gives me a general idea of all the changes and trends that are constantly unfolding.

Keeping track of trends—whether it’s in sales, writing, or other services—can give you a leg up on the competition and stimulate your creative juices. Being able to stay flexible and keep up with the changes are the hallmarks of a successful small business.
