They say you haven’t lived until you’ve seen “Guys and Dolls.” They say you’re uneducated and sheltered. So I decided to come out of my shell and see it. I guess I’m now educated, but I confess, I’m not sure what all the hubbub’s about.
Frank Sinatra is Nathan Detroit, a professional gambler who runs a floating crap game. The police are on to him and he’s got to find a new location. He’s found a place that will work, but he’s got to come up with some cash. Running into an old friend, Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) he bets Sky that Sky, a known womanizer, can’t take a cold lady missionary from the Save a Soul mission to dinner in Havana. Sky can’t resist a bet, and so he turns on the charm, convincing Sister Sarah that she just has to have dinner with him. In return, he promises her that he’ll bring his entire gang of gambling buddies to church.
Sarah can’t resist the chance to save so many souls, so she goes to Cuba for dinner. To her surprise, and Sky’s, they have a wonderful time and the seeds of romance start to grow. But when they return home, they find that Nathan has been using the mission as the location for his crap game.
Sky wants to make good on his promise to Sarah, and so he rolls the dice himself. If he wins, all the gamblers will come to church with him. He sings the song we all know and love, “Luck Be a Lady Tonight,” and he rolls straight wins, taking all the gamblers to the Save a Soul mission to keep Sarah’s honor intact.
There were a few moments of humor in this show, and the music was good. However, to say that this is the one musical you need to see is stretching it a bit far. I’m glad I saw it, but it’s nowhere near my favorite and I won’t look down on you if you decide to pass.
