As a stay-at-home-mom I have questioned the significance of my role as well as the position God would have me in regard to the body of Christ. I know I am doing a valuable service to my young children getting to devote a good amount of time to them during these early years especially. Recently I’ve really begun to discover the role God has given me as a mother in ministry.
There is no other person who currently spends more time with my children than I do. I may have the most influence in their little lives. As they grow and go into school full day, others will also influence them, but I will still be mom; the one who tucks them in, kisses their owies, and knows their fears and what makes them laugh. My ministry is being a mother. It’s one I should never underestimate. Here are some ways I find myself reaching my children for the Lord:
- We discover together the wondrous things God has made like the ocean, stars, mountains, moon and sun. These are clearly evidence of a divine Creator.
- I set examples of Christ-like behaviors like keeping my word, being honest, respecting others and taking care of my responsibilities.
- We sing and I share stories and tidbits of information about Christ and the Bible.
- My husband and I take our children to church where they continue to learn about Jesus and His greatness by others.
- Our children are disciplined promptly and appropriately in love. This is to insure they learn at a young age there are consequences for actions while the price is still small.
- We pray together before meals and before bedtime at least. Doing this helps my children to be thankful for what we’ve been given and get them in the habit of coming to God in their times of need.
What a wonderful responsibility parents have with their children. When we have stressful days with our kids it can be hard to appreciate the fact we have been blessed and entrusted with an awesome assignment. It is truly an honor to have the ministry of motherhood but no one ever said it would be an easy one.
