One of the hardest parts of attending college while having small children is finding time to study and sleep. Many mothers find themselves spending late nights studying. In this article, I have offered a few tips on how to keep up with your academics after returning to college.
Take your assignments in pieces and try to do a little each night instead of waiting and having to complete it all at once. It is much easier to set small goals for yourself on a daily basis. You can often squeeze in fifteen minutes of reading each day easier than you can find a 45-minute block on one afternoon.
Review class notes and lectures as soon as possible after the class. Reviewing on a daily basis aides in retention and makes studying for tests easier
Become active in your learning. Tape lectures or transfer notes to a tape recorder so you can listen to them while you are driving. Make flash cards and have your children help with the studying. Create graphs and charts when appropriate.
Study when you are in the best mental state of mind. If you are a morning person, do not try to study late at night and vise versa. Create an area of your home that will be your study area. Make sure that the children are aware that this area is yours and should not be bothered.
Find another person in a similar situation as yours. It always helps to have someone that can relate to you. Try to never choose a study partner that does not have other obligations such as a job or family. The partner may not understand why your schedule is not as flexible and may create more stress for you.
Returning to college may put more responsibility on your family for a while. However, if it is something that you truly want for yourself, everyone will greatly appreciate your hard work.
