I know, I know– I’m not too fond of name tags as a rule either. I’ve written before several months ago about the importance of wearing name tags for some types of businesses, but I was recently at a network event and it dawned on me how incredibly necessary name tags are in order to make the most of the opportunity to network and promote a business.
If you don’t have a fancy little pre-made name tag, wearing one of those “Hello, My Name Is:” tags is far better than not wearing anything at all. Believe it or not, people will not think less of you for wearing a name tag and will actually appreciate the added visual aid. A name tag helps people identify you and remember your name after they’ve left the event. While talking and glancing at your name tag, they will have a better chance of absorbing your name and business than if you don’t have a name tag on.
This brings me to the question of whether to put the name of your business on your name tag or just your name. While someone may argue with me, I think that the business name is important. Perhaps, more important than your job title—especially if you are representing and promoting your own home business. You want people to associate your name with you and you with your business. You can accomplish this by writing your business name clearly under your name on your name tag.
If you’d like something a little nicer, but don’t want to spend the money to have a name tag made at a print shop or a specialty company, you can get the card stock and design and print a name tag on your home computer. They also make little name badge holders that can be purchased at office supply stores. This way you could print something off with your name and business name and logo—for very little expense. Then, you’d be ready for any networking opportunities that will arise.
