This week’s family home evening lesson is about helping your children to commit to keeping the commandments. You can learn more about this topic by reading “Commitment to the Lord” by Elder John B Dickson. You may want think about a personal story of how you were able to commit to the Lord.
You should open the lesson with a prayer. You can begin by sharing Joshua 24:15. After you read this scripture you should discuss the meaning of the scripture briefly. You may want to pull some examples from the talk about how committing to keep the commandments can bless your life. You may want to touch briefly on a few specific areas that your children should make commitments. You can talk about the Word of Wisdom and share the story of Daniel (Daniel 1:3-20). In this story Daniel stands up to the king’s servants to follow the diet that he knew he should eat.
You may also want to talk about times when it may seem difficult to keep the commitment to the Lord, but show how you are blessed for keeping the commitment. The story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den (Daniel 6).
You can also share the story of the people of Ammon who committed to never take up the sword again, even in defense of their own lives (Alma 24). Their sons were blessed and protected because of their faith and sacrifice (Alma 56).
If you have younger children you may want to focus specifically on one scripture story and one point that they should focus committing themselves to keeping. If you have teenagers you may want to broaden the lesson to include the many different challenges that they are facing them. You may want to challenge your children to take their commitment to the Lord in prayer, since that will help them to gain the strength to keep the commitments. You can close the lesson by sharing Doctrine and Covenants 82:10.
You can use “I Love to See the Temple” p 95 and “Dare to Do Right” p 158 from “The Children’s Songbook” for opening and closing songs. You may also want to use “As Zion’s Youth in Latter Days” p 256 from “Hymns.” Do not forget to have refreshments and a fun activity.
