Creating Child-friendly Homes

Do you think about your kids when you are considering purchasing a home or when remodeling? You should, they are part of your family also and in doing so you send the message to your kids that you are glad they are living with you. At least that’s what ParentLife thinks. In their September 2005 issue, they offered the top 10 tips for a child-friendly home, they are:

(1) If you are thinking of remodeling, ask your child for his opinion about décor.

(2) Make sure each child has his own space. Even if sharing a room with a sibling, make sure each has a designated part of the room as his own.

(3) Make the house accessible for the little ones. Hang coat hooks at their level, have a step stool in the bathroom for sink use and store his snacks and drinks where he can reach them. Also, designate lower shelves in the family room where your child can store his book, puzzles, etc.

(4) As a member of the family, your child has certain responsibilities including household chores. Assign age-appropriate chores and make sure your child completes his assigned tasks.

(5) If you have a family calendar, allow your children to add their own important appointments, practices and activities to it.

(6) Here’s a neat idea. If your kids agree, allow them to switch bedrooms. This gives them a chance to redecorate and get a new space.

(7) In the family room, have lots of big comfy pillows and beanbag chairs so that kids will want to hang out with their parents in a place that’s not stuffy and formal.

(8) Showcase your kids’ artwork on the refrigerator or frame it and hang on the walls.

(9) Plan for the time when your kids will want to invite friends over for the night. Purchase, bunk beds, futons or sofa sleepers.

(10) Finally, organize your house to avoid clutter. Make sure you have ample storage bins for toys, games, etc.
