Does Your Business Have a Clear Purpose?

Have you ever said to your child, “Just exactly what are you trying accomplish?” Or, perhaps, someone has said this to you at work, or when you yourself were a child? Well, sometimes this question can come off as annoying, but when asked the right way, it can get us to thinking about just exactly what ARE we trying to accomplish? In our home businesses, it behooves us to have a clear purpose and set a direction that makes sense to us and fits with what we are trying to accomplish with our business efforts.

So, what would constitute a clear purpose for a business? In order to be truly effective, it should be about more than just money. While you may be inspired or motivated to make as much money as you can, or make enough money to buy a new car or house—that doesn’t really incorporate all that a solid purpose should be. Most of us put some good, hard thought into whether or not to start our own home business. And with that thought, we probably generated all sorts of reasons why we should and why we should not (the pros and cons). Obviously, the pros won out and we can probably revisit those “pros” and look at part of what drives us—part of what our purpose is in operating our business.

A purpose can be similar to a “mission statement” or it can be different. Your business’ mission may be to provide a helpful product or service to people, while the purpose of your business is to provide for your family, build job skills and independence for yourself, and have increased wealth potential in the long term.

Having a clear purpose that you have identified yourself can give you a real boost—you’ll feel like you know exactly what you’re trying to accomplish and feel strong and convicted in that purpose.
