Top 10 Reasons To Hate Summer Exercise

It’s summer. No, I know technically that summer isn’t supposed to start officially until June 21st, but it’s hot and it’s muggy and that makes it pretty close to summer. I’ve already had my first sunburn of the season and I’m likely to have another one even if I can remember to do the sunscreen the way I’m supposed to.

Any who, just for fun, here are the top ten reasons to hate summer exercise:

  • It’s hot. Yes, it’s hot. When it’s as hot as it can get down here in Texas, doing outdoor activities in the afternoon is an exercise in misery. You need to time your workouts to avoid the suffocating heat and if it’s extremely humid to go with the extreme heat – it’s even worse
  • Sports aren’t my thing – I know, I’m into fitness and exercise, but sports really aren’t my thing. Summer is a great deal about sports from soccer to baseball and more and I’m just not that into it
  • Swimming – swimming is great and summer is great for swimming, but too much chlorine and my hair turns funny colors, not to mention that I often get sunburns while at the pool
  • Horses, Dogs and More – Summer means fleas, flies and ticks and more. I hate flies and I hate ticks, I’m not especially fond of fleas and don’t get me started on the mosquitoes
  • Sweating – I’m not thrilled with smelling like old shoes and sweat socks, not to mention that once I start sweating, it takes me a lot longer to cool down
  • Sunburns – I mentioned this earlier and while I think saying sunburn is enough, let me add sports bras and sunburns do not fun companions make
  • Outdoor cycling is a summer boon and it can be a great deal of fun to do, but if you’re driving then having a biker around every corner can leave you frustrated
  • Bugs – I know, I said flies, fleas and mosquitoes earlier, but they bear repeating. Mosquitoes love me way too much and I like being outside during the twilight hours without being sticky in Off
  • Pool Politics – If you use a community swimming pool, it can be a real struggle to find the right time of day that lets you get out there and swim and enjoy and not be mobbed by other children or teenagers being out of control
  • Starting summer not ready for summer can be a real discouragement no matter how hot or beautiful it is outside – because who wants to put on a bathing suit when you don’t feel bathing suit fit
