Moving and Your Home Business

Moving is tough stuff! Getting organized and moving from one house to another is challenging and overwhelming enough–without having to take into account a home-based business too…

One of the problems with moving a home-based business is that you may need to continue working, while you are in the process of moving. Depending on the type of business you operate, this can range from easy (just taking the lap-top with you and keeping things going) to rather complicated (if you have merchandise or product that you have to have handy). Being able to juggle the tasks and time management needed to keep working and organize a move can be huge too! Add in the down time for travel and set-up at the new house and business income can definitely be affected by a household move.

In addition to income issues, just keeping track of all your business records and equipment in the midst of the move takes extra focus. It may need to be some things that are packed last and unpacked first. Some people planning a move, purposefully take a vacation and shut down business operations for a week or two in order to accommodate a major move. While this can take planning and may mean a temporary loss of income–the sanity and time management effects are worth it.

If you have to keep working at your home business during a household move, organization and planning will definitely be your best friend (not to mention some flexibility and patience)–the more time you can put into planning and gradually getting ready for the move (instead of putting everything off until the last minute) will keep things from feeling completely out of control, and keep you from losing important records, customers and clients. Make sure that you explain to your clients and customers what will be going on, your time frame, etc. if they will be aware and need to know about your move. You’ll need to prepare them for the upheaval and changes too.
