Flowers can be a big expense at a wedding, but you don’t really want to do without them. Here are some easy, fun ideas to be frugal about your wedding flowers but still make your big day extra special.
In an earlier wedding article, I talked about how friends and relatives can pitch in to help with your wedding, and that will help your budget. A great way to have some frugal flowers for your wedding is to ask others to help grow them. Depending on the type of flowers that you want to have, and the preparation time for your wedding, this can be easily done. And even if your heart goes to roses, you may just be able to find plenty if you ask.
I know a bride who approached her neighbor about purchasing some of his beautiful pink roses. The blooms were lovingly tended every year with pride and were absolutely stunning. The neighbor was so flattered to be asked, that he gladly gave away all of those roses to the bride as a wedding present. His garden looked a little sparse for the rest of the summer, but he loved telling anyone who stopped by where all the roses had gone. An interesting side note: One of the guests at the wedding was so impressed with the blooms that she arranged to buy her own flowers from the gentleman the following year. He has put in a second row of roses and has his own little homegrown business now.
But generous neighbors aside, here is another great idea to save on flowers. Consider decorating with greenery instead. You will save a lot, and you can create a look that is full of old world charm. For example, tiny white lights in potted ficus trees are beautiful and elegant. In fact, I got this idea when visiting a turn of the century estate in New England that could be rented out for weddings.
