Advertising your garage sale, can be costly, and if you don’t know the proper way to go about it, can be very ineffective. In order to get the best advertising, reach the most people, and have a successful sale, there are some tips that might help.
1. Use Bulletin Boards for free advertising. Many grocery stores, church offices, schools and community centers have bulletin boards, that you are able to post an ad on. If they have a form you must use, be sure to grab one, or find out the rules and regulations to posting an ad on the board, and get started. These are usually free and are a great way to get the word out. Many people check those boards frequently, because they know the sales, items and other notices, all concern them.
2. Flyers are not necessarily free, because you do have to pay for the cost of the paper and the printer ink, but printing up several, and placing them around town, is an excellent way to get drum up some business. You could even have a teenager put them on doors, thought be careful with that, because many communities and neighborhoods have rules about that.
3. Spread the word to friends, family and neighbors. Ask them to continue spreading the word about it. Bring it up at your next church group, or your child’s class party, or a sports game. Word of mouth can spread like wildfire, and best of all, it’s free!
4. Take out a newspaper ad in at least one paper. Some prefer to stick to their local community paper, but you might be surprised at how many people will travel quite some distance to come and visit your sale, if the ad looks good. Try to use a paper that covers a large area. The ad is not free to take out, but will more than likely generate some great business, and if you have quality items to sell, will make back your cost, fast.
5. Signage might just be the most important advertising method you can have. Make your signs bold and easy to read, sturdy and weather resistant. Also check out the community laws and regulations about signs, and follow them. You don’t want to spend all your profits on a ticket. Sign placement is important as well. Be sure that you can see signs from both sides of a street, clearly directing the person towards the direction of the sale. Use balloons outside your home to let them know it’s where the sale is.
Good or bad advertising can seriously effect your profit the day of your sale. Be knowledgeable about the do’s and don’ts before the sale, and you might be rolling in the cash at the end.
