Why do we clean everything when spring is ready to bloom? Some people just do it because they think their home could use a good, thorough cleaning at least once a year. The real reason for this spring cleaning tradition is to prevent your home from becoming infested with little pests that also bloom in the spring!
The slightest crumb of food or leftover juice spill hidden away somewhere could be detected by ants, flies, and other insects from pretty far away. Their sense of smell is far higher than humans, and when they need food they can find it with that attribute alone.
I’m not sure when this tradition began, but it’s a fantastic idea to keep your home safe from pests. I know when it’s spring here in New Hampshire after a grueling, icy winter – when the mosquitoes and ants come. However, throughout the year, you do need to maintain this cleanliness as much as you can.
Tips for an Easier Spring Cleaning:
1. Take it slow. Choose to do one room, or a section of a room, each day. You can even do every other day – whatever works best for you.
2. Make a list of each room and/or section and cross them off as you complete them.
3. If you can, open your windows to let some fresh air in, and let some of the cleaner’s chemicals out that you might be using.
What to Clean?
We clean everyday (dishes, vacuuming, etc.), but spring cleaning means getting to those places and items that you don’t clean on a regular basis. These things can be walls, dusting in high areas, moving all furniture to vacuum, washing rugs and curtains, and a whole lot more. You’ll find them as you examine each room. Just remember to take it slow. It doesn’t have to be done in one day!
Stay Safe!
