Concerns of Public Education: Z = Zoning

I have enjoyed addressing the various concerns of public education. However, I am also excited to move on to more issues and topics. This will be my last article on the A to Z concerns of public education. Today, I am ready to address the letter Z. In this blog, I will discuss the letter Z for zoning.

Zoning is the assignment of students to specific schools based on location. In some areas students have no option but to attend the school that they are zoned for attending. In other locations students have the freedom to attend other schools but transportation is usually not provided.

Zoning is not enforced in my area. Parents may drive students to any school that they wish for their children to attend. However even though zoning is not enforced, it is still a concern. Schools can experience overcrowding due to zones not being followed. It is also a concern for students who trade buses during route to a school.

Some students change schools several times during the school year without moving houses. This can cause problems within the school system. Some students move due to discipline troubles or conflicts with teachers.

In other area, zoning is enforced and is also a concern. In these areas, some parents must struggle with sending their children to an undesired zoned public school or attempting to afford private school.

Some people even move physical addresses in order their children to attend a specific school or get to play on a specific ball team.

In locations where zoning is enforced, zones can be adjusted or changed. In these cases, parents and students become upset and angered at the thought of having to change schools and be bused to a different area.

Regardless of whether zoning is enforced in an area or not, it can be a concern for the schools, the parents, and the teachers.
