Frugal Uses for Soda

This might seem like a strange title for a blog, but stick with me. You see, believe it or not, we don’t drink any soda in our household, at least not unless one of us is sick and needs a little bit of flat ginger-ale. But, we do sometimes purchase soda to have on hand for birthday parties and visitors, because we know so many people who enjoy soda. We also don’t drink coffee, but that is another story.

We often find ourselves with half-bottles of empty soda, leftover from those parties and visits. Often, we ask our guests if they wouldn’t mind taking the leftovers home, since they would otherwise be wasted. Of course sometimes we forget to do that, especially when things are in the hectic clean up/wrap up of a party, as they were last weekend.

Maybe you don’t have the leftover soda problem, but maybe you have had a time or two when the soda in your fridge was flat and unappetizing.

Fortunately, I have discovered a couple of uses for soda that we aren’t going to drink. And, for these uses, it doesn’t matter if the soda is fizzy or flat.

Cleaning is a good one. If I am going to throw the soda out anyway, instead of heading for the sink, I head for the toilets. There is something in most sodas (colas especially) that seems to do a great job on getting out lyme and other hard water stains. I let the soda sit in the toilet bowl overnight.

Another use for leftover soda is in cooking. Cola is great for a roast in the crockpot, and the same can be said for a lime or ginger-ale soda and chicken. Or freeze the soda for ice pops or pour it over crushed ice for a great “snowcone” or “slushie.”
