All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 (1996)

In “All Dogs Go to Heaven 2,” Charlie the Dog (Charlie Sheen) has been in Heaven for a little while. It’s a pretty nice place, but he’s bored. There’s no excitement – everyone behaves themselves all the time. When his good friend Itchy (Dom DeLuise) finally kicks the bucket, Charlie is so glad to see him. Maybe now there will be something to do. But Itchy’s a rule keeper and doesn’t want to stir up any trouble. How dull.

Carface (Ernest Borgnine) is in Heaven too, and he’s been a very good angel. In fact, he’s just received the award for the most rehabilitated. But he’s actually there under false pretenses – he wants to steal Gabriel’s horn. They need it in Heaven to open the Pearly Gates – without it, no one can get into Heaven. But it’s wanted on earth, too. It can open any door, any safe – it’s a thief’s dream. Carface swipes it and returns to earth with all sorts of evil plans in mind.

When the angels realize that a rescue must be made, Charlie leaps at the chance. Who better to return to San Francisco than him, a street-smart dog? Plus, he’d love to be a real dog again for a while. He volunteers, and Itchy goes with him. The task – get the horn back before someone else dies and needs to get into Heaven!

But Charlie gets sidetracked by a beautiful doggie named Sasha, voiced by Sheena Easton. Dismayed to find out that he’s a ghost and no one can hear him, Charlie makes a deal with a sinister soul – a collar that allows him to be visible in exchange for Gabriel’s horn. He’s playing with fire, but he’s in puppy love.

Meanwhile, the dogs meet up with a little boy who has run away from home because his mother is going to have a new baby. (May I just say, I’m so tired of this storyline?) Working together, they manage to return the boy to his family, get the horn, and save Heaven. All in a day’s work.

Carface’s boss, an evil cat highly reminiscent of a devil, was pretty scary. You will want to preview this movie to make sure your young ones won’t be too frightened. (I was frightened and I’m 31.) But overall, it wasn’t bad, as far as sequels go. I can’t say it was fabulous, but I didn’t think too much of the original movie either, for that matter.

This film is rated G.
