Celebrities Branching Out

There is something about Valerie Bertinelli that I find very appealing. As a kid I watched her on “One Day at a Time” and later happily read about her wedding to rock legend Eddie Van Halen. During her time in Hollywood Bertinelli has put together quite a resume: actress, rock-star wife, mother – and most recently, author.

The 47-year-old is following in the footsteps of fellow actress Kirstie Alley by joining Jenny Craig and writing about her battle with weight. Bertinelli’s memoir is called “Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time.” The book will be published in April 2008.

According to Bertinelli, her book will touch on her life as a teenage TV star and her 20-year marriage to and subsequent divorce from Van Halen, but most of the memoir will focus on her challenges with weight loss and self-esteem issues.

The actress went public earlier this year and vowed to lose 30 pounds by September. She recently told TV’s “Entertainment Tonight” she has lost 28 pounds so far.

“I need to do this in front of millions of people so I can’t mess up,” Bertinelli recently wrote in her Jenny Craig blog.

It sounds like she won’t have a problem reaching her goal weight, but how successful do you think she will be as an author? Will you read her book?

Bertinelli is not the only B-list star branching out. Once popular rapper Snoop Dogg is venturing into the world of television with a new reality series.

The series, which is scheduled to debut on E! Entertainment Television later this year is described as “hilarious and heartwarming,” and will attempt to show the “hip-hop heavyweight trying to balance his different worlds.”

According to network execs: “The juggling act that Snoop faces day-in, day-out between career and family is certain to resonate with viewers.”

Well, at least they hope it does. The rapper, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., has three children and is involved in a youth football league he founded. But whether those activities will make for must-see TV viewing remains to be seen. If that doesn’t perhaps watching the rapper fulfill his court-ordered 800 hours of community service (for pleading no contest to drug and weapon charges) will.
