What’s all the fuss about natural daylight? In recent years, there have been numerous studies about the healing qualities of natural light and how depressed, sick, and stressed people can get when they don’t get enough natural daylight. Working away in a dark basement can be bad for your health!
I am not going to pretend to understand all the research about various types of lighting and light rhythm cycles and such things–but what I do know is that I feel better when I get plenty of exposure to natural daylight while I’m working. There is a reason why the corner office with all the windows is coveted in the myth of corporate America and I don’t think it is so all those birds and gulls can see us working–I think it is because we actually feel better and are more positive and energized when we’re getting plenty of natural light.
So, what does this mean for your home business? It means that your work space or office should be well-lit. And that this lighting should include plenty of natural light that comes from windows, glass doors, skylights, etc. The great thing about working in a modern world is that most of us don’t have to be tied down to a desk in a dark room–especially if we are running our own home-based businesses. With laptops and portable equipment, we can move to where the sun or light is to do our work.
Keep in mind that while you are evaluating your work-at-home space, or looking for a good location to squeeze your office or desk into a corner of your home, that you make sure you have plenty of natural light available–it will keep you happier and you’ll have more energy and focus to get work done. No hiding away in attics, closets, and basements!
