Who wants to make mistakes? No one does, of course. Or at least, most of us would rather not have to bumble through or face the consequences of massive errors (or even small errors). But, in reality, the fear of making mistakes can keep us from taking the risks and chances necessary to try new things and build a thriving business.
In order to feel free to try new things and come up with innovative ways to do business, we have to first free ourselves from the fear of making mistakes and errors that might be inhibiting us. Of course we have flaws and troublesome areas, of course we are going to misjudge, miscalculate and have to learn some things the hard way. But, if we let the fear of making mistakes get the better of us, we won’t be bringing enough freshness and genuinely new ideas and ways of doing things into our businesses to help them grow.
I am as guilty as the next person! I hate that feeling that I might do something wrong, or commit an error that will take huge amounts of effort to correct. There are plenty of times when I would much rather stay within my comfort zone than put myself out there and risk making a big mistake, looking like a fool or novice, or costing my business money that I can’t afford to lose. But, the flip side is that if I don’t try out new things and risk making mistakes–my business will stagger and die from lack of innovation and growth. Not to mention, my own personal development and efforts will falter from playing it safe all the time too. Sometimes, we just have to learn how to let go of our fears about making mistakes, and give ourselves permission to take those risks!
