It is amazing how important it is to have a good Primary chorister. Many may brush aside this calling, as something that is secondary or others may think that the chorister only teaches songs. The Primary chorister really brings the music to life for the children. The chorister will help the children learn songs that teach gospel principles. These songs may come to mind when the children are struggling with something in their lives. Here are four tips on being a successful Primary chorister.
1) Be there each week. This makes a huge difference to the children. If they know you care and come consistently, they will listen better. They will learn because they have a good relationship with you. Children need consistency the most out of everyone else in the church.
2) Be enthusiastic when you are teaching the songs. If you love music and singing, and it shows, then the children will learn to love to sing. Forget about how you are looking and acting and get on the children’s level. It is okay to be silly (at appropriate times). It is good to share why you like particular songs. It is important to praise the children when they sing.
3) You can use visual aids and games to help teach the songs to the children. The visual aids can help the children memorize the songs. Games are a great way to review the songs you already have learned this year. Singing softly and loudly also helps to shake things up when the children are first learning the songs.
4) When it comes to presenting the songs in the Sacrament program, think outside of the box. You can have small groups sing verses. You may have accompaniment by other instruments played by the Primary children. You may have the youth join in on one song in the program. You should talk about this with your Primary presidency.
