Slowing Down and Meditating

As members of the church we are counseled to care for our bodies. The fact that we view our bodies as gifts from our Heavenly Father helps us to realize the importance for caring for our bodies properly. Usually when we think of caring for our body we think of doing more, but today I am going to talk about doing less.

It is true that we need to exercise. We need to eat healthy food and avoid sweets. We also need to make sure that we get plenty of rest. However I think it is too easy to ignore the signals that our bodies give us when we are overdoing. Stress does not just affect us mentally and spiritually, it also negatively affects our bodies.

In some ways I feel fortunate (at least as fortunate as you can) to have a body that does not tolerate stress well. I begin to feel the effects of too little sleep, poor eating and no exercise very quickly. There are times when I ignore these signs and push through. However, I always pay the consequences.

It is important for us in all aspects of our well being to take time to slow down, rest, pray and meditate. The ability to regularly take stock of our priorities and make sure that we are on track brings greater peace. In addition you have more energy, because you are not wasting it by trying to do too much at once.

We can each take time to care for our bodies and our spirits on a regular basis. We need to recognize that they are related. As we take time nourish ourselves spiritually, we will have greater peace and hope. This helps to alleviate the stress that affects our body negatively. Similarly as we take time to properly care for our body, we are better able to tune into our spiritual side.
