My county has recently undergone many changes in school administration. Some schools have received new principals while other schools have received the addition of an assistant principal. The new school year should be very exciting with many new ideas.
The principal is the key element in the school’s mood and atmosphere. It is important for a school to have a positive, uplifting leader. When the faculty and staff are happy with their leadership, they are happier with one another. A school works best when teachers support one another.
A good leader does more than give orders and dominant. A good leader will use good judgment and reasoning for his or her decisions. An effective leader will present ideas and take input from teachers. When an effective principal makes a decision, the parents and teachers will support the decision because they have placed trust in the principal. However, at some point in time, there will be differences and disagreements.
In the past, principals and other jobs of leadership were thought to be mainly male roles. However, the last several years have shown an increase in female school administrators. About half of elementary public school principals are now female. High school and private school principals are still predominantly male.
There are several differences in how a male and a female feel a school should be managed. I have worked for both a male and a female principal. I have seen both pros and cons of each.
I think that it gives a school a good balance to have a coed team of principal and assistant principal. When a coed team works together, they can to create a balance among ideas and decisions. When two females or two males are placed into the leadership roles, the administration can lean too far to one side.
