Is there poetry on your refrigerator? Magnetic poetry is a great addition to your house if you have children who are old enough to read and old enough to not eat the magnets! Besides, it’s a lot more fun than regular refrigerator magnets.
The magnetic poetry kits come with lots of words printed individually on small thin strips of magnets. I love having these random words on my kitchen appliances. I’ve never seen a child (or an adult for that matter) who can resist rearranging the words.
Playing with words encourages original thought, experimenting with language, and creativity. It’s a no pressure way to write poetry. And while the kids are playing with these magnets they learn new vocabulary words.
You can make your own set with a printer and magnet sheets. That way you can include spelling or vocabulary words from school, or your children’s names, favorite characters, or places you’ve visited. Or you can buy pre-made sets. You can find special sets for children like the Kids Story Maker, the Kid’s Kit, the Word Play Board, and Rhyme Maker. The sets even come in French, Italian, German, and Spanish so you can express yourself in different languages.
I like the appeal of leaving messages for each other, and reading the different word combinations that people come up with.
You can buy a Shakespeare or haiku poetry kit, too. It’s fun to have so many kits to pick from.
And you don’t have to put them on the fridge. I have our kit on a magnet board in the kitchen. They tend to migrate to the fridge and washing machine though. You can also buy journals or even key ring sets. But I like having the communal set out for family and friends to play with as they pass through the kitchen.
