Unfortunately, many women have had the heartbreaking experience of losing a baby before it is born. As many as 25-30% of all women experience this tragedy, which is often experienced only among family and close friends. The question often arises why G-d would allow a woman to become pregnant, only to cut short that precious life before the child sees the light of day. Although many of these women go on to give birth to healthy, beautiful children, every Jewish soul is like a letter in a Torah scroll, a letter that is essential and distinct from others.
While there can be no consolation for the loss of a soul from this world, there is a beautiful teaching from noted Kabbalist Yitzchak Ginsburg. He brings the time-honored concept that every soul comes into the world for a specific mission, and when that mission is fulfilled, the soul can return.
Most Jewish souls go through many reincarnations to fulfill all of the commandments of the Torah. Some of us have a great deal of work to do, while others have less of an onerous task left to complete. The holiest neshamas may only need to take one breath, or may never need to leave the womb, to accomplish their purpose in this world. These are pure souls that only need that one polish, that one extra touch, to be absolutely perfect.
Of course, we cannot truly understand G-ds ways. There is no way to explain why some people suffer from infertility while others have many children, or why some are rich and others are poor. When faced with these events, there is no requirement to find an answer to the problem. Just knowing there is an answer is enough.
Hopefully we will merit to see the Jewish Messiah, who will usher in an era when all parents and children will be reunited and when the knowledge of G-d will become as plentiful as the seas.
