Craft with CDs

Don’t just throw away all those free CDs that come in the mail advertising internet services. Turn them into fun crafts your kids will love! Here are two ideas that make excellent use of what might have been just junk mail.

Hovercraft

My son made a glider like this at scouts and then we spent all afternoon playing with it at home.

You will need:

Balloon

Lid from a water bottle (the kind that has the little cap on it that you can pull up and push down)

Plumber’s Goop or E-6000 glue

Permanent markers

1. Glue the lid from the water bottle in the middle of the CD, so it covers the hole. Use Plumber’s Goop, E-6000 glue or some other thick, strong glue. Let dry.

2. Decorate the CD with the permanent markers.

3. Now blow up a balloon (but don’t tie a knot) and with the cap pushed closed, stretch the opening of the balloon over the cap.

4. Set the hovercraft on a smooth, flat surface, like your kitchen floor or kitchen table. Pull the cap to the up position and watch the hovercraft hover.

Sun Catcher

Hang this sun catcher in a window and watch it make some rainbows.

You will need:

Two CDs

Strong Glue

Dimensional Fabric Paint

Rhinestones

Fishing Line

1. Sandwich the end of some fishing line between two CDs and glue them together so the plain, silver sides face out. Make sure the fishing line is glued in securely.

2. Decorate one side of the CD with the fabric paint (don’t try and use colored dimensional glue or glitter glue–it will just peel off). Try squiggles, lines and polka dots. Simple designs work best. Stick some rhinestones in the fabric paint for some extra sparkle. Let dry.

3. When the first side is completely dry, turn the sun catcher over and decorate the other side. Let dry.

4. Tie it around a curtain rod or tack it to the wall above a sunny window.
