Shopping In Charlotte

A vacation is not a vacation with shopping, is it? Not in my family of shopaholics. Where I come from it’s unthinkable to come home empty-handed from any type of trip, be it business, pleasure or otherwise.

Given my circumstances it’s no wonder I have a list of favorite stores unique to each state in the country.

If you are headed to Charlotte, North Carolina in the near future here are a few shopping hot spots where you might consider dropping a few dollars:

SouthPark

If you are a fan of the TLC show “What Not To Wear” then you may recognize this mall of malls. A couple of years ago, the renovated mall was the stage for a taping of the popular makeover program, where hosts “ambush” fashion victims and give them a $5,000 makeover. I don’t think you have to worry about getting ambushed at SouthPark anymore. But, it certainly is not unreasonable to drop a few grand there in stores such as Brooks Brothers, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co., St. John Boutique, Montblanc, Burberry, Lacoste, Neiman Marcus, and Sephora. I like to take a shopping break at the Cheesecake Factory. But, you could dine at a number of SouthPark restaurants including upscale Morton’s. SouthPark also caters to the non-shopping types who are dragged along to help carry bags. Husbands, brothers, sons, and other male counterparts tend to hang out on SouthPark’s ultra-comfortable chairs that are strategically placed outside of the mall’s most popular stores.

Bruce Julian’s Clothier

This local landmark has got G-U-Y written all over it. This is a store that understands that not all men were made for shopping. That’s why it is crammed with guy-friendly distractions, including TVs tuned to sports, vintage pinball machines, a mini putting green, and an antique toy collection. While the guys are enjoying the amenities the ladies can shop till they drop for their other halves. The store specializes in men’s clothing for all occasions, from Bill’s Khakis and Lucky Brand Dungarees to Bobby Jones golf apparel.

Charlotte Antique & Collectibles Show

If you love antiques you’ll want to mark your calendar for the Charlotte Antique & Collectibles Show. It takes place on the first weekend of every month and features the wares from more than 1,000 antique and collectible dealers. The show is held on 90 acres and features some real gems. From antique rugs, furniture, china, crystal, linens, and toys to collectibles and vintage clothes. July’s Sell-A-Bration and November’s Spectacular events have two to three times the regular number of dealers on hand. Admission for regular monthly shows is $10 for a weekend pass, or daily passes are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for kids 12 and under.
