Scattering Ourselves to Pieces

A while ago I met another writer who does a lot of what I do. She runs a website for other moms, she works as a writer, she takes on freelance work and she works at home. She’s a great writer with a wonderful sense of writing style: You know the type of writer I mean, with words that seem to flow from some source deep inside.

The downside? Lately it appears that she has her hands in one too many cookie jars, and that she can’t seem to focus on one particular aspect of her career and hold true to that in order to build her clientele and grow her company.

If you find that you are scattering yourself too thin with too many projects that are not similar, it may be time to step back, reevaluate your career choice(s) and narrow them down some.

Case in point: She decided that she would write for several companies and run a website. Then she took on another project that required even more time and that had nothing to do with the other writing jobs she had been holding down. Now she finds that she is overworked, overstressed and just scattered all over the place.

At times those of us who work at home may find it difficult to narrow our scope. We want to do well, we want to make money and we want to keep as many doors as possible open, so that if one aspect of our career falls through we have something else to fall back on.

The problem with this is that we never really narrow our niche enough to tailor to a certain clientele, which means that we will never build our resumes in that one area. In addition, scattering ourselves too thin means that we will never have time to just sit down and enjoy a good show on television or some quality time talking with our spouse and children.

This week, consider what it is that you want your home based business to focus on and then make a list of all of the extras you are currently doing that need to be put aside, or at least that need to require less of your energy so that you can focus more on the matter that means the most.
