Primary Time: Helping Your Children Grow Spiritually

As parents it is important to realize the responsibility you have towards your children. While many people easily acknowledge and recognize the need to care for the physical and emotional needs of their children, they neglect the spiritual needs. Each child that is a member of your family is a precious gift from Heavenly Father. It is important to take the time to teach our children about Christ and the gospel. This will give your children direction and hope throughout their lives.

Of course one of the best ways to do this is through your example. As you go to church, study the scriptures and live a Christ-like life, your children will learn about the gospel. Additionally you should take the time to read and discuss the scriptures with your children and have them accompany you to church. If you know the church is true the best testimony you can give is to live the gospel to its fullest.

Additionally you need to teach your children about agency and accountability. This includes allowing your children to fail and to receive consequences for the mistakes that they make. This does not mean turning your back on your child. You can be encouraging and supportive as they work through their difficulties, but it is important to allow them to learn how to do this on their own.

Another way that you can help your children spiritually is to love them. This will help them realize that Heavenly Father loves them as well. If a child never experiences love, it is difficult for him to imagine what the love of Heavenly Father is like. It is important that this is never something abstract for your children. As you help them feel and recognize God’s love, this will give them the tools they need to overcome so many trails in their lives.
