I recently discovered Just One More Book: A Podcast About the Children’s Books We Love and Why We Love Them. This is a warm, wonderful, inspiring podcast that will have you wanting to curl up with good books and share them with small children.
I miss the days of hearing “just one more book” from little children. I still read to my children, but now we are more likely to tackle 700 page Harry Potter books than The Piggy in the Puddle.
The hosts, Andrea and Mark, are a book loving married couple with two daughters. They have posted over 200 podcasts on different children’s books, news from the children’s literature world, interviews with authors, and even commentaries from their listeners. On a typical podcast, Andrea and Mark describe what happens in the book and their favorite scenes and illustrations. I like that they describe the book from not only the perspective of a parent and also from a child.
They tape three podcasts a week. They log more than 2000 downloads each day and around 27,000 site visits per month. Just One More Book is listed with the American Library Association as a “Great Website for Kids”.
The podcast is taped in a coffee shop, so there is a lot of background noise. Most of the time the coffee shop noise provides a charming atmosphere. I feel like I’m listening to friends talking about a book over coffee. Other times the background noise is a little distracted.
You can subscribe to the podcast with RSS or ITunes, or listen directly from their site.
Their site is great place to search for books for children, too. You’ll find lists of books organized by types of illustration, types of protagonists, subjects, and values. Each podcast has tags for age appropriateness and appeal and themes like gratitude, patience, tolerance, family.
What a great place to learn more about good books!
