Family Home Evening: Using General Confernce Talks

My family home evening idea for this week involves General Conference. Now that we have had the opportunity to listen to our church leaders, it is time to apply the lessons they have given us to our lives. You know your family the best, so if you feel that one talk was something that your family needed to work on, focus on that talk. Otherwise I have a few ideas that might be fun.

One thing that you could do if your children are old enough is to have them summarize their favorite talk. You can summarize yours as well. Then prepare a simple trivia game in which you have the your family match the title or topic of each talk with the speaker who gave it. Divide into teams and let the winning team choose the refreshments for the night.

If you have younger children, you might want to focus more on just one talk, and retell a story from that talk. Or you can choose a subject from a conference talk, and tell a scripture story that relates to it. President Hinckley talked about how his choices and the Lord’s choices led him to the opportunities he has had to serve others. You might talk about how the choices your children make now will affect them in the future. In the past President Hinckley has used the metaphor of the train going the wrong direction and ending up hundreds of miles away from its destination because of getting switched on to the wrong track, something that can happen by just being a few inches off course.

Whichever approach you choose, make sure that you bear your testimony to your children about the importance of listening to our church leaders and following their counsel. What ideas do you have for using Conference talks in your family home evening lesson?
