Forget about New Year’s Eve or Thanksgiving, for some folks Halloween is the most cherished holiday of the year. Personally, I tend to shy away from events where costumed creatures make it their personal mission to make visitors lose their voices from screaming and their lunches from pure fright. But, for others getting their scare on is a part of what makes October such a memorable part of the year.
In my previous blog I listed Halloween happenings taking place in California and Arkansas. In this blog I’m spanning the country to find other haunting good times. Take a look:
VIRGINIA
If you are looking for a family-friendly Halloween event that is infused with history lessons head out to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia during the month of October. During the Halloween season the park hosts a recreation of a famous trial that determines the guilt or innocence of a woman who was accused of being a witch in 1706. “Cry Witch,” is one of several educational programs offered in the spirit of Halloween at Colonial Williamsburg, which also features tours that explore ghostly legends and evening candlelight walks along popular park paths.
TEXAS
Ripley Entertainment attractions is at it again this year hosting special Halloween events besides their year-round exhibits of weird and creepy artifacts. Throughout the month of October “Fright Nights” will be held at Ripley’s Haunted Adventures in San Antonio. In addition, a “Carnival of Screams” is being offered at Ripley’s Louis Tussaud’s Palace of Wax in Grand Prairie, Texas.
TENNESSE
There’s nothing more frightening than being imprisoned with inmates whose next stop is the gas chamber, right? Being the wimp that I am, you won’t find me at “Death Row—The Haunted Halloween Prison” this year. However, if you revel in being tortured by costumed crazies then have at it at this annual Nashville event where you can spend time with inmates who would love to make you their final victim.
If you plan to be in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, during October you might consider checking out a Halloween film festival with a special appearance by actor Bill Moseley from horror flicks “House of 1,000 Corpses” and “The Devil’s Rejects,” which takes place October 26-27.
SOUTH CAROLINA
Parents are encouraged to bring their little ghosts and goblins to the big Halloween Hullabaloo event going on in Columbia October 26 –27. The festival will include a haunted house, healthy trick-or-treating, a kiddie carnival with arts-and-crafts, and a costume parade.
FLORIDA
Ripley Entertainment is hosting ghost walking tours and a “Ghost Train Adventure” in St. Augustine, Florida this year while in Tampa, perennial fan favorite, Busch Gardens Africa will be transformed into a “Howl-O-Scream” complete with haunted houses, scare zones, shows, and the usual scream-inducing roller coasters.
