Oh Geez! Announce It Already!

I’m all for respecting the privacy of celebrities (to an extent), but I think, at this point, the world is tiring of Jennifer Lopez’s attempts to dodge pregnancy rumors.

For those of you who don’t read the newspaper, watch TV, listen to the radio, or read this blog, the award-winning singer is reportedly four months pregnant with twins. AND she is in the middle of a huge media tour to promote her new album and current concert tour. As such Lopez is making the rounds on a number of talk shows and other entertainment news shows. However, she has reportedly asked the hosts of each of the shows NOT to discuss the pregnancy rumors.

Never mind that she has already exposed her baby bump to thousands of concertgoers last week (unknowingly—-thanks to a gust of wind that lifted her loose fitting top) and she has ditched her traditional belly baring shirts and tight fitting pants for extremely loose fitting no-waist dresses.

Yesterday Lopez danced around a pregnancy quasi-question posed by Diane Sawyer on ABC’s Good Morning America.

After performing before a live audience on the morning show Sawyer said to the singer: “All right, all right, I know what everybody’s asking, and I know you have so little privacy in your life … so, I’m just going to say, ‘How are you?’ ”

Replied Lopez: “I’m very well, thank you. This is really, really a great, happy time in my life. … Everything’s great.”

PUH-LEEZE!

Hours later Lopez headed over to tape an interview at CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. I was disappointed to see even dear ol’ Dave caved into Lopez’s demand not to speak about her growing belly. Instead, Letterman asked if J.Lo would be as tough as her own mother if she ever started a family.

“If I can be as great a mom as she is,” Lopez responded, “then everything will be all right.”

“So,” Letterman went on to ask her, “the idea of having a family is daunting, isn’t it?”

“Yeah,” Lopez answered with a broad grin, “it is.”

Listen, I can respect Lopez’s decision to remain mum on a subject that is obviously very private (after all, despite being outed by pal Paris Hilton and be visibly 6 months along Christina Aguilera has yet to officially confirm she is expecting and look how long it took for Nicole Richie to publicly announce she is about to be a mom) but when her demand for secrecy starts to affect innocent people I think that’s when she should just spill the beans.

I’m referring to an incident involving Dayanara Torres, the ex-wife of Lopez’s current husband Marc Anthony.

Apparently, the former Miss Universe inadvertently said a bit too much about Lopez’s belly—and now she is paying the price for doing so.

Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia recently reported that in an interview on El Escandalo TV, Torres gave Lopez’s pregnancy away. Torres reportedly answered a loaded question from a reporter about how the children she shares with Anthony were going to take the news of a new sibling. Torres replied, “They don’t know yet because I found out a day ago. But I imagine they will be happy, because when my sister had her kids they were.”

Shortly after the report aired Torres was reportedly contacted by an irate Anthony who demanded she retract her statement. (Man, I bet she’s glad she’s not still married to him.)

Yesterday Torres released another statement ending her role in the rumor-mill.

She wrote:

“I have neither confirmed, nor have first-hand knowledge of any pregnancy. I had been advised of pregnancy ‘rumors’ by my manager who wanted to make sure I was aware in case my children heard anything at school that I may need to address; so when I was approached by a reporter who stated as fact that my children were to have a new sibling soon, I assumed that this had been confirmed. My answer to him was that though they had no knowledge of a sibling, that I imagine that they will be incredibly happy. Marc, his family and I have a very respectful and mature relationship which we work hard to conserve for the benefit of our children.”

You’ll recall Torres has two sons with Anthony, Christian, 6, and Ryan, 4. She filed for divorce from the singer in January 2004, and in June of the same year, he and Lopez got hitched.

What do you think? Should Lopez just say she is pregnant and get it over with? (By the way, US Weekly plans to run a front-page story featuring Lopez this week with the headline: “Yes, She’s Pregnant.” The article employs “unnamed sources” to back their story.)
