General Conference: “The Weak and Simple of the Church”

In his talk “The Weak and Simple of the Church” President Boyd K Packer opens his talk by giving tribute to President James E Faust. He then mentions the recent sustaining of President Henry B Eyring to the First Presidency and Elder Quentin L Cook as a new apostle. President Packer then speaks about the process of church leaders being sustained and called. He spoke about the sustaining of church leaders and that this allows each of us to know that they have been called of God. This will prevent us from being led astray.

President Packer points out that each of the church leadership positions (as well as other callings) are filled by members of the church. While other churches may have difficulty finding people to fulfill the positions of the church, we as Latter-day Saints, have every member available to fill the positions.

President Packer speaks about the importance of realizing that one member is not more important than another member. It does not matter what your calling you are still of the same worth to the Lord. President Packer emphasized that the work you do in your family is more important than any other service you may perform.

President Packer also spoke about testimonies. He spoke of the calling that the Twelve Apostles have to bear witness of Christ. He went on to talk about his testimony when he was first called as a General Authority. He also tells a story about President Marion G Romney, and his testimony.

This is a wonderful talk. It really explains how people are called to serve the Lord. It can help you to understand why we sustain people. It also helps people to realize that the church views all members equally regardless of where you are serving. I hope that you will take the time to read this wonderful talk.
