Did you watch “Dancing with the Stars” last night?
While the contestants and the audience were up in arms about the brouhaha regarding illegal lifts, viewers at home were fired up about another portion of the program. Namely co-host Samantha Harris.
Harris returned to the show last night for the first time since giving birth to her first child three weeks ago. The decision obviously didn’t sit well with millions of fans who took their ire to dozens of Internet chat rooms and message boards.
MAN! I am glad I’m not Harris. That woman is being raked over the coals in cyberspace.
So what’s the deal behind the deluge of disses?
First, many loyal “Dancing with the Stars” fans are shocked that Harris returned to the show so soon after giving birth to a baby who was reportedly 3 weeks premature. The one person not surprised by Harris’ decision was her fill-in Drew Lachey. He told reporters that he expected Harris, a former model, dancer, and current workaholic to return last week. (By the way, Harris has willingly admitted that she is a workaholic and long before she gave birth she publicly announced that it was her intent to return to the show three weeks after giving birth. She just didn’t realize that she was going to deliver her baby three weeks prior to her due date.)
Speaking of Lachey, the former DWTS champ is the other reason why Harris has become the target of blistering ridicule.
Millions of viewers reportedly lit up ABC’s phone lines last night begging producers to bring back Drew. (I doubt it will happen given that the network has already booked Lachey to host a DWTS spin off show that will air next year.) And, boy, those viewers didn’t mince words. The ones sending notes to ABC execs on online message boards didn’t either.
I’m not going to repeat verbatim what was written, I’ll just say that many viewers believe Harris’ decision to leave her baby to return to DWTS was “selfish” and that the co-host “needs to reprioritize her life.” Some even called her decision “reckless.” Others expressed concern that Harris’ decision sets a bad example to young girls that work is more important than raising children. While still others believe that Harris hurried back to the show because she was afraid of losing her job… to Lachey.
Nick’s brother has quite a fan following and they were out in full force last night hoping to change producers’ minds. Many of the remarks made by Lachey’s fans were not flattering (to put it lightly) towards Harris. Let’s just say that millions of people think Lachey is not as “boring” as Harris (and that’s been extremely kind) and leave it at that.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Personally, I don’t think DWTS needs two hosts. Tom Bergeron is fully capable of hosting solo. He’s funny, articulate and has a ton of experience. I think he should just conduct the post dance interviews with the contestants himself, but I have a feeling for production reasons they need to have someone in the back. And since Bergeron can’t be in two places at once they hired Harris for backstage duty.
