In Step or Tangled in the Dance of Life?

Are you becoming tangled in the dance of life? Or are you following the instructor?

Recently my husband and I went for the first of a series of dancing lessons. We found, in what the instructor called the Tracey Lee waltz, it was not a case of two left feet but four, as we bumbled around tying to follow the moves the instructor and his partner made look effortless. For us, it became a tangle of legs as one of us always seemed to manage to go the wrong way.

It can be like that in life. We can think we’re doing all the right things and yet find out in the end we’re not in step with the instructor. In the Christian life our instructor is Jesus and we need to learn to follow his directions, otherwise we will be come hopelessly tangled and trip ourselves up.

The best place for us to find out what The Lord wants to say to us is in prayer and reading His Word. How can we know what He wants us to do each day unless we take time of a morning to commit the day to Him, to follow His instructions and prompts?

If my husband and I thought the Tracey Lee waltz was bad, the cha cha and the samba were even worse, trying to fit the required number of steps into a faster beat. We especially need to be in tune with Jesus, when the pace of life picks up. Otherwise how will we know what we should be doing and when?

The rumba slowed the pace down, but still proved to be just as difficult, trying to get the movements in sync -especially when compared with the instructors whose movements were fluid as silk. We may never get to the standard the instructors have achieved. But then it took them years and years of practice, we consoled ourselves.

At times we looked around the dance floor and were tempted to compare ourselves with others, but most of them had been coming for a long time. It was only natural they were more polished and found the steps easier. In the Christian life we need to be wary of comparing ourselves with other Christians. There is only one, we should model our lives on and that is Jesus. We may never measure up in this life. But we can aim to be like Him and ask the Spirit’s help to change us and mold us into his image. This is God’s aim, 2 Corinthians 3:18.

One of the songs we sang in our previous church was ‘In His Image’ written by Nicky Chiswell. It gives us the hope that though God’s image has been marred in us by sin, one day we all be changed and restored. We will be like Him. What a glorious future and hope awaits us. But we need to do our part now, by allowing God to deal with the rough spots and character flaws we have. Is there something you need to ask God to help you deal with today so you are following God’s dance pattern for your life?
