The Walt Disney Company, a southern California institution, has pledged donate $2 million to restore fire damaged areas and help victims of the recent California wildfires. $200,000 of that is being donated directly to the American Red cross for immediate relief efforts and the balance will be distributed on a case by case basis for rebuilding and restoration.
While that is very generous of Disney, here is what gave me the warm fuzzies:
The Walt Disney Company will be distributing care packages of toys and books to evacuated children and they’ll also be sending Disney characters on the road to visit shelters this week and help cheer up kids who are no doubt pretty shaken up and could do with a big dose of happy right now.
Disney as U.S. Ambassador
Well, not really. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has made a short 7-minute movie that will be used to greet international tourists to the United States in the latest attempt by the federal government to make it more enjoyable to enter the country at federal inspection areas of Washington Dulles International Airport and Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. Once the U.S. government comes up with enough money for the monitors, this video will eventually be shown at all international airports in the U.S. as well as at embassies and consulates.
Apparently, international visitors aren’t feeling the love when they enter the U.S. so this is an attempt by the department of Homeland Security and State Department to make them feel more welcome while they wait to have their papers and luggage inspected.
In true Disney style, the welcome video shows different areas of the United States including such well known attractions as the Grand Canyon, Golden Gate Bridge, and Washington Monument. It also shows people of various races and backgrounds saying “Welcome” and waving.
Considering the current situation at airports, I suppose a little Disney magic couldn’t hurt.
