Students Walk Out Due to Roaches and Rats

Schools are buildings like any other structure created. They get water leaks and damage and wear and tear just like any other location. Unfortunately, they too get spiders, mice, and bugs (including roaches).

It cannot be expected that schools stay exempt from these things just because they are a school. However, it can be expected that school administrators and official do all that they can to keep the school well kept and as free from these things as possible. This includes annual repairs and upkeep, spraying for insects, and clean conditions.

Our school, like many other buildings, has been known for the spotting of spiders. Some of the spiders have been identified as poisonous. The building was sprayed and sticky pads were placed in the rooms.

While most school officials do maintain their buildings, one student body felt that they were being neglected.

Students walk out of their high school in New York City stating that the conditions were unacceptable. Over 300 students left Clarkstown North High School in protest to roaches and rats.

The principal stated that the roaches had been a problem for several years. However, the rats did not arrive until an old house was torn down next to the school. Three rats were seen in the building. Two of the rats died in the ceiling. This led to even bigger problems including a terrible odor, and maggots. The school building has been around for many years also.

The students decided to return to school after the principal noted that he would discuss the issue with them.

As of now, I am uncertain how the roach problem will be handled.

Student snacks and lunch boxes left over night and over the weekend aide in attracting and keeping roaches and mice to the buildings. It is best for teachers to try to ensure that all food products in their classrooms are disposed of properly.
