One Eye on the Future

I do not know about you and your home business, but for me and mine—I get totally consumed with what is right in front of my face. Some days I spend so much time just focusing on the details that by the end of the day, I look back and wonder what I have actually accomplished on the grand scale of things. I know that it helps in terms of planning and growth to keep at least one eye focused on the future.

I’ve written before about the importance of long-term planning or at least some form of planning for a small home business, but not all of us take the time to do this. Then there are those of us who might do a long-term (or short-term) plan and then file it away and forget about it. Keeping an eye on the future might be more do-able for some of us because it does not necessarily involve a lot of detailed planning.

Where do you want to be this time next year? What do you see happening in your industry or what sort of trends are on the horizon that affects your business? Do you anticipate an expansion? Do you want to make more money next year or attend more events? Keeping an eye on what you would like to see happen in your home business can help guide you in figuring out the HOW in order to make it all happen.

Even though most of us are completely consumed with staying in the present and trying to get done what we need to today or even one week at a time, we can still keep a little of our attention focused on the horizon. What is coming down the road and what can we do to prepare or encourage it?
