Those of us who work on Erev Shabbos might have some difficulties leaving behind the workaday stress, getting everything prepared and entering the peace of Shabbat. While Shabbat is the original reason to say “Thank G-d it is Friday,” some of us feel some residual nerve stimulation from the work day, and may need to find time to unwind before greeting the Shabbat by lighting candles. However, there is food to put out and other things to do. How to unwind?
1. Prepare beforehand: This is the most common suggestion made to those who love Shabbat and have hectic lives. Make use of your freezer and cook dishes even on Tuesday. I have a rather small freezer, but I make as much as I can on Thursday.
2. Take a few deep breathes: Focusing on breathing is a good relaxation exercise for anyone, but it is a good way to make the transition between work stress and the peace of Shabbat. Focus on words like Shalom or other words that inspire a feeling of peace.
3. Find helping hands (little hands are great!): Teach your kids to appreciate Shabbat by helping to prepare for it. Even a three year old can get silverware ready or spread a table cloth. Involve the whole family.
4. Remember every task for Shabbat is holy: Even small things like cutting vegetables. The Priests in the holy Temple cooked and cleaned. This was the ultimate holy task
5. Concentrate when lighting candles: Focus on the blessings you want to give to your family and how much you love them.
Shabbat Shalom!
