Veterans Day

Did you know that Veteran’s Day began as a way to honor World War I Veterans? The end of the war, the signing of the armistice (which is why it was originally called Armistice Day) occurred at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. That is why officially Veterans Day is always on November 11th, although it’s celebrated on a weekday if it falls on the weekend, because it is a “day off” holiday (like today) for many.

Veterans Day has come to be a tribute of all Vets, not just those from the first World War. It is different from Memorial Day in that it isn’t meant to honor only the fallen and their families. It’s also meant to honor and show appreciation for the heroes living among us, the Veterans who made it home.

No matter how you feel about this war (or others) remember, it’s political leaders who start wars, not the brave men and women who volunteer for the armed forces.

There are many ways that we and our families can pay tribute to Veterans, from going to special events, dressing in patriotic clothing, and flying our flags, to simply saying a heartfelt “thank you” to the Veterans we know or meet on the street.

While “thank you” just doesn’t seem like enough, it is important to say it and it’s well-received in nearly every case.

However, if we really want to show our thanks, we can keep abreast of Veterans’ issues and work to make their situation better. Sadly, our leaders don’t always keep their promises and the brave men and women who sacrificed so much to serve this country aren’t always remembered appropriately, especially by way of benefits owed them.

Please learn more about Veterans’ issues from poor health care, unemployment, discrimination, homelessness, and rip-offs disguised as Veterans’ charities, and contact your legislators. Our Veterans deserve the best. It is our turn to fight for them to see that they get it.

Today is Veteran’s Day
