“A Pocket For Corduroy” is a cute story about a Teddy Bear named Corduroy who decides he wants a pocket on his overalls and goes out in search of one.
The story begins in a Laundromat one night where his owner, a small girl named Lisa brings him with her on a Laundry expedition. Lisa’s mother tells her to be sure and take everything out of her pockets before putting her things in the wash. Corduroy, who has been stowed on a nearby chair becomes interested in the idea of pockets and goes off in search of a pocket in the Laundromat. His search begins in an artist’s wet laundry bag, which Corduroy mistakes for a cave.
As the Laundromat begins to close Lisa is unable to find Corduroy and is forced to leave him in the Laundromat overnight. During his stay overnight he has several misadventures involving detergent, laundry baskets and more.
In the morning Lisa returns to the Laundromat and retrieves Corduroy. The book ends with Lisa sewing Corduroy a new purple pocket onto his overalls, and giving him a name tag so he will never get lost again.
This is a short, well-illustrated book that is perfect for bedtime. At around thirty pages it is the perfect length to captivate your youngster, and then help them off to sleep with a cute story fresh in their memory.
A few years back I saw quite a few Corduroy gift packs in the bookstores where you could purchase some of the series of books, and your very own Corduroy bear complete with green overalls. If you stumble upon one of those, it could make a great gift for a younger child. You could also make your own gift pack by purchasing a book, a teddy bear, and a small pair of baby sized green overalls for the bear to wear.
“A Pocket for Corduroy” is available from most bookstores as well as Amazon.com.
