I often write about different approaches to take with networking in order to benefit your career and your home business and one of the best ways is through professional and service organizations. Joining a group is a fantastic way to meet other people and promote your home business. But, what if you cannot find a group or organization that interests you or suits your goals and temperament? How about starting one yourself?
Just because other networking organizations or leads groups exist in your area—doesn’t mean there isn’t room for one more. You might find that you can really tailor and target your new group to fit people in your situation, or those who you would most like to network with. Perhaps the leads groups in your area are all geared toward working professionals—not those with at home businesses, families, or other obligations. Starting a group that is conscious and considerate of these factors could be just the thing. You may just attract other home business owners in a similar situation.
I have heard writers say that they finally wrote the book that they themselves most wanted to read—one that did not already exist. I think it can be the same story for so many different businesses—maybe you want to start a business group that also does volunteer work? Or one that serves as a study group to keep up on industry changes and trends? If you don’t want to start a group or organization all by yourself you may be able to use an existing organization (like the chamber of commerce or a community education organization) as an umbrella and simply start a gathering under the auspices of something that already exists. Either way, you can flex your leadership skills, provide something for your community, and serve your own business and career needs all at the same time.
