In the spirit of Thanksgiving I thought it would be appropriate to give thanks for an item that has helped bring so much joy to my life this year—my camera. I’ve dedicated entire blogs extolling the wonders of my favorite handheld high tech friend, but as dinner nears and I prime my photography equipment to capture my loved ones chowing down on turkey and pumpkin pie I am taking a moment to reflect on the wondrous gifts this single item has provided me.
If it were not for my camera my parents would have no means to view their beloved granddaughter. My mom and dad live 5,000 miles away from us and most of the pictures I take of my 3-year-old daughter (their one and only granddaughter) are sent directly to them so they can chart her milestones. My camera allows me to be a snap happy parent (yes, I am a proud member of the parental paparazzi). But it also allows me to shower my parents with shots of my daughter on her first pony ride; on her first trip to the U-Pick strawberry farm; wearing her first set of ear muffs; her first attempt at flying a kite by herself… these documented “Kodak moments” are the closest thing they have to sharing in her daily achievements.
My grandmother suffered a massive stroke a few weeks ago, and according to my mom the pictures I sent of her and my daughter (ones I took during our last trip home) are some of the only items she recognizes. What’s more, my mom says when my grandma looked at a recent shot of my daughter decked out in a purple pillbox hat, pink Hello Kitty sunglasses, a glittered tutu, and my high heels it is was one of the few times she cracked a smile.
None of these priceless moments could have been possible without my camera.
